A pickup truck driver later identified as John R. Connelly, of Boonton, stopped his truck behind a motorcyclist on Route 202 and Brooklawn Drive, where a crossing guard was letting children cross the street around 3:10 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, Parsippany-Troy Hills Police Chief Richard Pantina said.

Police began getting calls of a motor vehicle crash, and when they got to the scene, they learned that the 58-year-old motorcyclist had stopped on Route 202 so the crossing guard could safely cross the children.

Connelly allegedly stopped his pickup truck behind the motorcyclist and got out of his truck to assault him, the chief said.

The 76-year-old crossing guard attempted to intervene and was allegedly shoved to the ground by Connelly, who continued to assault the motorcycle driver until other motorists intervened, police said.

Connelly fled the scene in his truck and was found a short time later, Pantina said. He was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, issued a disorderly persons offense, and released.
